Department: Elementary and Early Childhood Education

This degree program is designed for persons who hold initial licensure in elementary education (grades 1-6) and are seeking professional licensure in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The program is designed to meet the “appropriate master’s degree” requirement, which is part of the criteria for professional stage licensure as set forth in the most recent MA DESE licensure regulations. This concentration is intended to help elementary classroom teachers learn how to effectively use various technologies to help their students learn. Technology is integrated throughout the program’s course work and offerings are aligned with Massachusetts standards.

Admission Requirements

  • A minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.8 based upon four years of work or a 3.0 undergraduate GPA based upon course work completed in the junior and senior years
  • Transcripts of all undergraduate courses
  • Evidence of passing scores for the MTELs® that were required for the applicant’s initial teaching license in Massachusetts prior to taking graduate level courses in the concentration
  • Undergraduate candidates will file an application for Graduate Admission in the semester the candidate is in the professional “block” of education courses (this applies only to students declared in the Double Degree program).

Foundation courses (15 credits)

Electives (15 credits)

Complete five graduate courses (400-level U/G or 500-level), approved by the program advisor. Four of the five electives must include a focus of the concentration, from the list below. Courses not on the pre-approved list must be approved by your advisor or the program coordinator.

Exit requirement

Successful completion of a comprehensive examination is required. Please see the Graduate Academic Policies and Procedures  section of this catalog for additional information.
