EDHM 356 - Teaching English in the Dominican Republic(3 credits) Prerequisite: Formal application through the Minnock Center During spring break, students from the EDHM, SPED and TESL courses will travel to the Dominican Republic to practice teaching English at Liceo Vetilio Alfau Duran, a local high school in Punta Cana. Students will learn about the social construct of race in the DR and practice enacting anti-racist and culturally sustaining pedagogy. Students will build rapport with students and develop lessons that include best practices for multilingual learners. Students will also learn about and analyze the constructs of race and color in the DR and compare them to the United States’ context. Prior to going to the DR, the group will meet to develop culturally sustaining lessons to enact at the school. After returning, the course will meet to reflect on the teaching and learning and generate action steps for effective pedagogy with multilingual learners in future teaching and learning. Offered spring semester. Additional fee required.
